Sustainable seafood.
Our mission statement calls us to be involved as responsible citizens in our communities. We set a goal to offer our customers more sustainable seafood options every year—an effort we believe will drive positive changes. It is essential for industries, environmental groups, and retailers like us to engage our stakeholders, including our suppliers, in the process so we can work together to find solutions.
Discovering better ways to seafood.
At Publix, we are leading the way in seafood sustainability. Teaming up with sustainable seafood suppliers, like Bluehouse Salmon, helps in the effort to protect our ocean ecosystems. We’re doing our part to care for our planet for generations to come.
Bluehouse Salmon is redefining sustainable aquaculture in Florida by raising Atlantic salmon entirely on land. Utilizing innovative Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), their Bluehouse™ facility maintains optimal conditions for fish health while minimizing environmental impact. The salmon are nurtured in pristine water, ensuring a clean and controlled environment. Their diet is thoughtfully formulated with alternative ingredients like algae oil and land-based proteins, reducing reliance on marine resources and supporting ocean conservation efforts.
By producing salmon locally, Bluehouse Salmon significantly lowers the carbon footprint associated with transportation, as their products are delivered by truck rather than airfreight. This approach not only enhances freshness but also contributes to a more sustainable supply chain. The company is committed to continuous improvement, aiming to source 100% of their energy from renewable sources through participation in Florida Power & Light’s SolarTogether program. Their efforts have earned recognition from organizations like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council, affirming their dedication to responsible aquaculture and environmental practices.
We want everyone to enjoy a variety of sustainable seafood for years to come. That’s why we’ve forged alliances with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) and Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI). SFP evaluates the fish stock and fisheries’ impact on the broader environment. GSSI verifies credibility in seafood certifications. Working with these two organizations helps our sustainability program play a bigger part in the solution.
Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) is a marine conservation nonprofit dedicated to helping the seafood supply chain function in as environmentally friendly a fashion as possible. Our participation with SFP gives us the opportunity to better understand important issues about seafood sustainability, including where to engage our sustainability efforts and how to help fisheries gain resources they need.
As part of its evaluation of sustainability, SFP assesses the management and health of wild fishery stocks and makes the information publicly available on FishSource.org* to provide retailers with information on fisheries’ sustainability status. They also actively work with fisheries to set up and implement fishery improvement projects.

The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative
The Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) aligns global efforts and resources to address seafood sustainability challenges as a public-private partnership with over 90 stakeholders throughout the seafood industry. We partner with GSSI to ensure that current and future sustainability claims meet a rigorous set of standards, so everyone can feel confident about their seafood purchases.
Ocean Disclosure Project
Publix became the first US supermarket retailer to participate in the Ocean Disclosure Project (ODP). The ODP is an excellent resource to help you make informed decisions about your seafood. You can find fishery locations, sustainability ratings, environmental impacts, and the types of fishing gear used in the process. Learn more about the Ocean Disclosure Project.*
